19th-century painting sold for $5,000 fetches $5.2M just over a year later

“Salisbury Cathedral from the Meadows,” had been sold when experts thought it was painted by fans of artist John Constable.
The seller of a 19th-century work of art may just feel like painting the town red.
The oil landscape by John Constable fetched $5.2 million at ¬Sotheby’s in Manhattan Wednesday — just 569 days after it was bought for a paltry $5,212,Bloomberg News reported.

Protecting yourself from online theft of art work

During a group discussion on Sunday, an artists revealed that she found that some one else had posted a painting done by the artist and was claiming it as her own. The artist is now reluctant to post any more of her art online for fear that her art will be stolen.
I found this data and would like to share it.

01/24/2015 Daily Painting

I was scheduled to go to Engine in Biddeford for a painting session. It started snowing heavily so I decided to work in the studio instead. I gessoed seven canvases and worked on a painting that I started on Friday to prep for the painting session for today. This is what I had completed by 3 PM. I wasn't satisfied because the cup and the table was the same value.

I darkened the table and lightened the background, basically reversing what was on the canvas before. This is still a work in progress as the background needs further definition and the cup needs more detail.

Oil Pastels

These were done this afternoon. One of the advantages of Oil Pastels is how quickly they can be used. In  Fall Sunset, I roughed in the tree with a marker, drew the branches with a brown oil pastel that was then washed with Gamsol. The oil pastel was applied on top of this base. Several layers of varnish kept the oil pastel from 'muddying' the lower layers.
On the Rocks was laid in with brown oil pastel, the lower layers were protected by layers of varnish.
